FINANCIAL FOCUS: 4 Tips for a Frugal Turkey Day

Thanksgiving is upon us, and the cost involved in throwing a fantastic feast can sometimes come as a shock, even though we know the holiday happens every year. This year, don’t be caught unaware and utilize these four tips for a frugal turkey day:

Don’t over prepare. Although Thanksgiving is notorious as the holiday for over-indulgence when it comes to dinner plates, resist the temptation to cook for a small army, when in fact you’re cooking for 12. This tip alone can save a great deal on your Thanksgiving grocery-run.

Speaking of grocery shopping – have a well-thought out shopping strategy. It’s easy to splurge when you’re shopping for Thanksgiving meal prep, but you may surprised by your savings if you double check your pantry before hitting the grocer. Also note that by shopping earlier and having your list of ingredients, you’re less likely to pay last-minute premiums!

Simplify your décor. Don’t put too much stock in your Thanksgiving décor if you’re looking to make the holiday special. A nature walk might yield the best-looking and cheapest (ahem, free) décor pieces you can find with gourds, pinecones and leaves. Opt for DIY-decorations and thrift store finds to save.

Go old-school with your serve ware and opt for the good china, instead of expensive and non-green-friendly paper or plastic plates and utensils. Clean up might take a bit longer, but you’ll save more money in the end.
